The skin presents several antioxidant defense mechanisms. However, some situations, such as longer exposition to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), are able to increase the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The generation of ROS might take to photoaging and diseases like cancer. Topic administration of antioxidants is an efficiently way to improve endogenous skin protective system and an strategy to decrease oxidative damages caused by the UVR to skin. The purpose of this study is to assess the photochemoprevent potential of Lychnophora salicifolia Mart. extract, from which compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were isolated. To achieve this aim, will be performed antioxidant activity tests in vitro and will be also evaluated its effect in skin cell culture. Moreover, to prove antioxidant and anti-inflammatory efficacy of this extract in vivo, will be performed assays using hairless mice irradiated with UVR. With this study, we hope to obtain results that contribute to affirm the applicability of plant extracts as photochemoprevent agent into topical formulations.
