Émile Gaboriau and the "roman judiciaire" in the France-Brazil relations during the nineteenth century.

Abstract

This project is an unfolding of research for the development of my Phd thesis, in which I analyzed the published literature of crime in Brazil. This proposal is intended to investigate the production and circulation of the roman judiciaire from the perspective of a transatlantic circulation printed in the nineteenth century. Considering that the genre had its initial production in France, the research will focus on Émile Gaboriau, the first roman judiciaire writer. This author was important within the context of a mass media production in France, especially in regard to the productions in the form of feuilleton and book between the 1860s and 1870s.The translations were published in Brazil from the 1870s, the same time that were circulated in other countries. It must be analyzed the work of Gaboriau inserted in his own time, as part of the relationship between writer, reader and editor. It is relevant work because will be considered the suports of production and the meanings of his novels at the time.The projeto temático, conceded by FAPESP in the second half of 2011 (A circulação transatlântica dos impressos - a globalização da cultura no século XIX ) is a good opportunity to development the discussions to be achieved in this proposal. The analysis of the roman judiciaire, its publication in France and the translation to journals or books that circulated in Brazil can be thought only in terms of the globalization of culture.Other writers also identified their novels as roman judiciaire, but it was from the Gaboriau's novels that emerged this kind of narrative construction. At the same time, this designation appears to defined works with similar senses in Brazil. However, as it comes to thinking in terms of cultural acquisition, it must necessarily analyse the meanings of roman judiciare in terms of others appropriations by writers, editors and readers both in France and in Brazil . The aim of this purpose is to understand this process.
