Studing the pagode - of viola!

Abstract

Based on an aesthetic and socio-historical approach, this research project aims to analyze the importance of pagode (Brazilian musical style originated in the 1960s) to the genuine sertanejo (country) style, bringing to attention elements that can help to understand why the pagode became, with Tião Carreiro, one of the identity references to the viola (country guitar) music and to the new viola players (musicians and teachers who at the present time make up a huge group of players with systematized musical background from academy or not). In another words, this project is directed specifically to reveal some still vague features of the musical scene surrounding the pagode, would they be the ones related to viola or the reverberations of the pagode lyrics enunciated by the players in face of the hybridism of country music with foreign genres or still the phonographic industry strategy, which aims to give artistic value to the pagode, Tião Carreiro and Pardinho.
