The anomalous transport of particles represents a major limitation to the magnetic confinement of plasmas in toroidal devices, such as tokamaks and stellarators. Recent surveys indicate that this phenomenon represents a direct manifestation of the electrostatic turbulence in the plasma edge. In this region of the system, the dynamical behavior of the low-frequency turbulent waves can be described by the generalized Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equation. Considering a four-mode approximation, we can use this result in the description of a non-linear interaction between a zonal-flow fluctuation and three drift waves.In this project, we propose to study the dynamical mechanisms underlying the anomalous transport in the plasma edge. For this purpose, we intend to develop a Hamiltonian formulation for the four-wave model. From this, we will examine several relevant concepts in particle transport, such as chaos and stickiness. The understanding of these dynamical properties has direct influence on the instability control of confined plasmas. For this reason, we also aim to compare our theoretical predictions with experimental results.
