Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the Athenian agora space under Roman dominion, from II B.C. to II A.D., focusing mainly on the analysis of the material culture revealed in the excavations on the archaeological site. Our intention is to reflect on the developments and appropriations of the built environment within the Athenian agora aiming at showing the social, economic, and cultural transformation of this polis. The whole project has also a concern regarding the concept of landscape change, which can reflect the dynamics of Athenian society under Roman influence. So we also seek, through this specific analysis, to cast some critical thoughts on the idea of the city concept within the Ancient Mediterranean world.(AU)
