Historic monuments In Brás and Mooca

Abstract

This scientific initiation project is about the Historic Monuments in the neighborhoods of Mooca and Brás, in Sao Paulo. The study is linked with other research projects, which concern the same neighborhoods, that were jointly developed through research groups in FAUUSP - Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de Sao Paulo (University of Sao Paulo: Architecture and Urbanism School) and in UNIFESP - Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo (Federal University of Sao Paulo), coordinated by the professors Beatriz Mugayar Kuhl and Manoela Rossinetti respectively. All these research processes have the same base since the bibliographic reference to understand those areas are very much alike. Still, each student involved in the process will dedicate to a more detailed study about a specific area. Thereby, all research projects have a common ground when it comes to justification (with synthesis from fundamental bibliography) and method, but are specific about the delimitated study areas. (These boundaries are detailed and justified in this project). The neighborhoods of Bras and Mooca have been through sizable changes since the last quarter of the nineteenth century, especially due to the expanding industrial activity. Thus the research will seek to identify the structural elements of the study area, highlighting the role of industrial units, housing, education structures, religious, cultural, leisure and commerce, the structuring of the road system, and the role of the railroads. The study will be developed through bibliographic, documented, and iconographic research, exploring especially the Washington Luis Archive, as well as Sao Paulo's blueprints to track the area's transformation through time. Furthermore, a photographic survey will be made in the field to show the current state of buildings. The research is meant to characterize the changes in specific areas over time and its current conformation to identify buildings that may be of interest for preservation in the chosen field. It is expected that this study provides subsidies for the development of public policies for inventory and preservation.(AU)
