The natural resources use has caused the loss of environmental balance. With the rational use and controlling the amount used comes the meaning of sustainable balance. The use of indicators can be a good alternative for the assessment of environmental performance, as well as an environmental management tool since the conceptual aspects and structure of the indicators are clearly presented. Looking for indices that provide an increasingly realistic evaluation of water bodies is propose develop an index, based in fuzzy expert system, for the quality of the water that is used to public supply. The validation of the methodology will give up using analyzes of monitoring Sorocaba River, which is made by Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental of Sao Paulo (CETESB). Instant of that, the result will be used for the comparison between the classic index of quality water, used for CETESB, and the index created based on a fuzzy inference system. The knowledge obtained in this project will be useful in the management of the water bodies. It is important to know the proposed methodology to create the index that has a simple structure and will be useful for people involved in decision-making processes related to water quality and for those who do not have mathematical training.(AU)
