Abstract

The process of settlement and formation of cities in the far west of the state of São Paulo and in southern regions of Mato Grosso were followed by a series of developments that led to the creation of inland transport and communication in the region, either by rail , navigation areas and even the agricultural colonies, becoming mark in memory consolidation projects to occupy the areas called "empty spaces". In this perspective, along with trading posts, lodges and river ports, it is observed that from the decade of 1940/1950 for such transformations have intensified due to the commencement of the installation of private and governmental projects for construction of a hydroelectric complex in the High Paraná Region, as occurred in the area of Tres Lagoas, former southern Mato Grosso. Analyzing the sources, we find that the migration and growth in the region occur in the midst of campaigns that seek to present the necessity of the existence of a hydroelectric project for the region, which arise in the early 1960s with the Urubupungá complex and Jupiá Hydroelectric Plant, current Engineer Souza Dias. At this time, a series of speeches jumped in local and even national media about the consolidation project and so a range of subjects highlighting the legitimacy of the work, its ideology of progress and a new image for the state, that even before the start of work . Thus, disputes over legitimacy, power, and thus memories emerged throughout the 1960s and marked the memory of the dam construction until its completion in 1970, establishing connections with memory marks of the past and leaving ramifications for the future.
