Influence of pre-slaughter fasting on-farm or in lairage on the behavioral response and carcass and meat quality variation in pigs

Abstract

The pre-slaughter fasting is an important factor in animal welfare and carcass quality and meat resulting. Some farmers make fasting only in transport, which can cause travel sickness and death in animals. This project has aimed to compare the effects of on-farm vc at the plant fasting on animal welfare (physiology and behavior) and carcass and meat quality of pigs. To this, 840 animals (120 ± 10 kg liveweight) will be divided into two groups with different intervals of waiting time and will be slaughter in groups of 70 animals per treatment, six withdrawals per day (six repetitions). Variables such as body weight, number of dead animals and number of animals injured after transportation; behavior at loading; behavior in lairange; blood lactate level, hot carcass weight, meat yield, carcass damage, and data on meat quality will be analyzed. The data will be analyzed using ANOVA, with group (70 animals) as the experimental unit for the behavior study, and each individual pig will be the experimental unit for other studies. (AU)
