Abstract

Introduction. Generally, epidemiologic studies related to chronic outcomes evaluate risk factors for end-points, such as cardiovascular diseases. However, it seems to be relevant to investigate factors associated with intermediary events, since to knowledge the causal pathway might optimize public polices interventions. Objectives: 1. To define three latent variables representing physical activity (PA) and food consumption (FC) patterns, as well as the inflammation status (IS). 2. To build three path diagrams to evaluate direct, indirect and reciprocal effects of factors related to individual and ecological level, potentially associated to central obesity, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and cognitive performance. Methods: Cross-sectional- population-based study carried on the municipality of Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil in 2007 (EPIDCV Project). The target population refers to the adults aged 30 years or more living in the city. The sampling process was conducted in multiple stages and the study sample was composed by 2,471 adults (nw). Confirmatory factorial analysis will be applied to built the latent variables (PA, FC and IS). The analytical phases will involve six different steps using multiple linear regressions (two levels). The path diagrams will be drawn using multilevel structural equation models, and the measures of effect for individual [and ecological variables (PA, FC and IERP) will be estimated by point and 95% confidence intervals.
