Between Brazil and the foreign repertoire of plays, the Portuguese bridge

Abstract

This project proposes to conduct a research abroad, at the Center of Theatre Studies, University of Lisbon, under the guidance of Profa. Dra. Maria João Brilhante, that, because of the Theater History in Portugal as a focus of her research, can provide an important contribution to the development of a research project 'Between Brazil and foreign repertoire of plays, the Portuguese bridge'. The order, with a trip to Portugal, is to empower the development of the project Undergraduate Research 'Notes and theater news in the press: Diary of Rio de Janeiro from 1850 to 1878', that I have been developing since May, driven by Prof. Dr. Orna Levin, in the thematic project within 'The transatlantic circulation of printed matter: the globalization of culture in the nineteenth century', which includes Brazil, Portugal, France and England. As the plays, especially the French repertoire, were, in most cases, translated in Portugal before arriving in Brazil, the study of the Portuguese theater, in contact with local searches, becomes fundamental to understand the Brazilian theater scene at that time. Therefore, this project proposes the approach to development studies at the Center for Theatre Studies and consulting secondary sources, being guided by emblematic cases of the relationship between various countries from the theatrical representation, as with the play The Lady of the Camellias, de Alexandre Dumas Filho, which was translated by a Portuguese and traversing various countries, became a symbol of the cultural dimensions of globalization of the nineteenth century.
