Evaluation of the fifth vital sign for nursing in view of interdisciplinary approach

Abstract

Described as the fifth vital sign, pain is considered a public health problem and should be evaluated on the subjective aspects of an interdisciplinary team. In children and adolescents, this assessment is still little explored compared to the scientific production of pain in adults. This study aims to evaluate the perception of pain (5th vital sign) the experience of child and adolescent cancer through self-report Multidimensional Scaling and Pain Assessment (EMADOR) of Faleiros Sousa. Participate, Children and adolescents, 5-18 years of age who are in cancer treatment, of both sexes and their mothers. Will be excluded those with problems understanding and communication. The analysis of self-reports will be based on comprehensive reading and Bicudo Martins (1994). The analysis of EMADOR will be made by means of psychophysics from the arithmetic average (MA) and standard deviation (SD) in each of the 50 descriptors of pain (acute/chronic). After calculation, we will analyze the descriptors with higher and lower perceived assignment in acute or chronic pain by participants then will be organized in descriptive and tabular form and/or graphics. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Hospital das Clinicas and the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo. This paper is relevant because provides reliable data on multidimensional aspects of pain oncopediátrica through an innovative instrument. This can increase their knowledge of nursing and other health professionals to interdisciplinary pain management more consistent with the real need of the research subject and hence the possibility of bringing economic benefits to the Brazilian government, in relation to the area of pain oncopediátrica.(AU)
