Metal nanoparticles as catalysts opened doors for the development of new green synthetic routes of a large amount of chemical compounds with industrial potential. Nanocatalysis for the transformation of renewable raw materials into commercial interesting products has been explored by many research groups and great results were obtained related to selectivity and activity of the catalysts. The use of carbohydrates as raw materials for chemical industry is low when the high availability, low costs, and a not explored potential are considered. One of the derivatives of carbohydrates that it is becoming even more detached for industrial application is the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, HMF. The HMF is produced mainly by the dehydration of fructose, and its oxidation products are of high applicability for polymers industry. The selective oxidation is one of the most important transformations of organic groups in organic chemistry, being crucial in industrial processes. This project aims at the development of novel catalytic systems based on palladium nanoparticles coated by oxides, in a core-shell structure, to be used in the oxidation of HMF. (AU)
