Abstract

This research project is intended, firstly, to translate from Italian to Portuguese, and prepare for publication the set of 40 unpublished letters sent by Brazilian composer Eunice Katunda (1915-1990) to the Italian composer Luigi Nono (1924-1990), between 1949 and 1953. The second objective is to investigate the nature of the artistic relationship that has been developed between the two composers and its impact, assuming that Eunice Katunda has played an important role in the ideological construction of Luigi Nono's artistic project. This hypothesis will be verified based on the analysis of documents, consisting mostly of primary sources, among which are included: the correspondence of Katunda and Nono, unpublished writings of Luigi Nono, sketches, manuscripts of works and books from the personal library of the composer, acquired during his correspondence with Katunda. This research aims thus to contribute to the study of relations between the European and Brazilian music, and the development of a new analytical perspective of this relationship, demonstrating the importance of Brazilian composers in modern worldwide music scene.
