MULTISCALE TIME SERIES ANALYSIS OF SCINTILLATION EFFECT IN SATELLITE SIGNALS FROM NON DECIMATED WAVELETS

Abstract

The research of ionospheric scintillation, caused by fluctuations in amplitude and phase of an electromagnetic signal when it passes throw irregularities in ionosphere electronic density, has being very important in Ionosphere and Satellite Positioning areas. This is due to the growing influence of GPS in navigation and remote sensing. Also by the fact of scintillation severely degrade this system performance. There are several gaps to be filled and challenges in the development of an effective method for correction of the scintillation effects in GPS signals, or even for scintillation prediction, mainly for equatorial and low latitudes regions. In this project the objective is to investigate and characterize/modeling the scintillation effect not only by a mathematical perspective, but also statistical, considering for that, the multiscale/multiresolution analysis by non decimated wavelets. It is only possible to propose methodologies and algorithms of correction of scintillation effects in satellite signals if these effects are well characterized in terms of distribution, longitudinal/spatial, cycle and seasonal variations, besides autocorrelations. To evaluated the spatial variation (latitude and longitude) of scintillation effect in equatorial region and low latitudes, all the proposed models and methods will be applied for the stations of CIGALA (Concept for Ionospheric Scintillation Mitigation for Professional GNSS in Latin America) project, whose receivers are the state of art in ionosphere monitoring.
