Abstract

This project of international cooperation is part of a doctorate study for cellulase production by solid state fermentation (SSF) in packed bed bioreactors, in which several scale-up strategies are applied. Agro-industrial by products, specifically sugar cane bagasse and wheat bran, are used as substrates and the newly isolated thermophilic fungus Myceliophtora sp. as microorganism. The doctorate study includes experiments and modeling. The international cooperation will focus on modeling of heat transfer and moisture migration within the bed during the fermentation process. This is one of the most deleterious phenomena that affect SSF in packed beds, turning heterogeneous the production of enzymes (CHINN et al., 2008; FOONG et al., 2009). The research group in Brazil has a variety of experimental results on temperature profiles and moisture migration during fermentation processes for production of cellulases, pectinases and lipases using several solid media. Hence, modeling the moisture migration phenomenon will bring some understanding to the experimental results and will contribute to the scale up of the bench packed bed to a pilot scale. (AU)
