Abstract

The mantle, typical structure of Mollusca, has in its free margin, the mantle edge, several specificities and functions arose during the evolutionary history of the phylum. Especially in the class Bivalvia, the mantle edge has a key role in the comprehension of the evolutionary irradiation of the group and in its conquest of new ecological niches. Generally, the bivalves have three folds in the mantle edge, whose diversity and plasticity are large. Investigating the anatomy and function of this body region of the bivalves will bring more elements to comprehension and evolution of the class. Beyond the knowledge of adult's anatomy, it's essential to analyze the pallial margin under the perspective of its morphogenesis or, in other words, the realization of ontogenetic studies that link the larval structures with the adult formation. Ontogenetic studies are rare in bivalves and they are limited to the analysis of the shell and hinge formation. Considering this context, the present research project intends to analyze the anatomy and morphogenesis of the mantle edge of the scallop Nodipecten nodosus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Pectinidae), using the stages of veliger, pediveliger, pos-larval, juvenile and adult. The option for this species is particularly important because it belongs to the Pectinidae family, whose representatives possess complex pallial eyes and sensory tentacles that attract the attention of researchers. Understanding the mantle edge morphogenesis in a group that presents such complex structures will bring relevant informations to the evolutionary approach. To develop this work, studies of the mantle edge anatomy will be carried out using histological techniques, Scanning Electronic Microscopy and Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy.
