Abstract

Pregnancies complicated by diabetes are associated with increased maternal and neonatal complications. The most serious maternal complication is the risk of developing diabetes type 2 in the next 10-12 years of the delivery. Perinatal complications include macrosomia with consequent increased risk of birth trauma and hypoxia /asphyxia, high rates of cesarean delivery, delayed lung maturation with consequent risk of respiratory distress syndrome, and metabolic disorders at birth, includinghypoglycemia, hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia. These complications worsen the prognosis of neonatal and perinatal mortality increase, consequently elevate hospital costs. The present study aims to calculate and analyze the costs of hospitalization and outpatient care in pregnant women with mild hyperglycemia and diabetes, using insulin, and quantify and compare the maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnant women with diabetes and mild hyperglycemia, who used insulin during pregnancy in ambulatory and hospital services.
