Abstract

Studies focusing on genetic diversity and population structure of naturally fragmented taxa are of conservation concerning. Such fragmented populations are more subject to endogamy and genetic diversity erosion due to the pronounced effects of isolation and genetic drift. Pilosocereus jauruensis is a columnar cactus species restricted to patches of xeric vegetation on rock outcrops occurring around the Pantanal biome in south-west South America. This species was recently resurrected from synonymy in the P. aurisetus species group, which encompasses a suite of closely related taxa occurring on patches of rockfields vegetation in eastern and central Brazil. Populations restricted to those patches of xeric vegetation in South America are thought to represent relicts of wider ancient distribution as a result of climatic changes during the Quaternary. The present study aims to investigate the genetic population structure of P. jauruensis by using microsatellite markers and to verify the relative importance of past and current gene flow on genetic diversity maintenance in this species. The results of this study might uncover distinct population segments within P. jauruensis since a number of taxa has been described and synonymized in its area of distribution. (AU)
