Abstract

The incidence of obesity, as well as differentiated thyroid cancer (CDT) has exponentially increased throughout the world. There is compelling evidence that these two conditions are associated and several studies have shown that adipocytes such as adiponectin, resisting and leptin, and ghrelin may be the link between these diseases. The objective of this project is to complement the studies started by our Ph.D. student Marjory Alana Marcello (CNPq 141299/2011-8 and FAPESP 2011/21582-2- in analysis) that have demonstrated that there was an association between excess weight with the risk for DTC. Our preliminary data also indicate that the serum profile of adipokines, could be linked to an augmented risk for DTC. In this project, we aim to validate the previously obtained data and to evaluate the relationship of polymorphisms in the leptin gene and its receptor with the DTC. This study may contribute to the development of new markers for diagnosis and prognosis, and help to draw a risk profile for DTC, leading to the implementation of preventive measures. We will use the TaqMan SNP genotyping methodology to investigate the genotypic profile of the molecules. These data will be compared with clinical and pathological characteristics and the outcome of patients.(AU)
