Abstract

The pharmacological properties of medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years. Currently, a large amount of research is being done into plant extracts and compounds that have been shown to display promising activity for the treatment of diseases affecting humans. In dentistry, the use of herbal medicines remains an unexplored field that could lead to interesting results. One of the diseases of major concern among professionals in the dentistry area is periodontitis, which is considered to be the second disease of greatest concern in terms of Brazilian public buccal health. This disease is defined as an inflammation of the tissues supporting the teeth; for instance, the cement, ligament, and bone. In an attempt to contribute with data on the use of plant species in the treatment of oral infections, the aim of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Salvia officinalis against periodontopathogens. The species S. officinalis also has a strong flavor and culinary properties and has been shown to exhibit antibacterial action. To evaluate this property, in this work we will use the broth dilution method for the determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the tested extracts and compounds. The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the same crude extracts and compounds from this plant will also be calculated. The bactericidal kinetics of the most promising compounds against periodontopathogens will be investigated. We hope that this research will contribute to the design of valuable drugs and treatments that will help combat periodontal disease, which can be considered a step towards more promising dentistry.(AU)
