This project for Post Doctoral Program proposes a study of the equatorial and low latitude ionosphere over the South America region using the Total Electron Content (TEC) as the major analysis parameter. In addition we will analyze the geomagnetic indexes (Sym-H, AE and Kp) and the interplanetary parameters (solar wind speed and magnetic field). Also it will be used data from many digisondes and magnetometers operated by INPE and from the Jicamarca incoherent radar to complement the study. In addiction we propose to study the day-to-day TEC variability and to develop the comparison of four numeric models for absolute Total Electron Content calculation using the GPS observables, in order to verify which one is the most reliable for application as the standard model for TEC calculation at the Aeronomy Division of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais. The programs available for comparison are: a) US-TEC, developed by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), United States; b) UNB-IMT (University of New Brunswick Ionospheric Modelling Technique), developed at University of New Brunswick, Canada; c) program for TEC calculation developed at UNESP of Presidente Prudente, Brazil; d) program to TEC calculation developed at University of Nagoya, Japan. An application for the standard model of TEC calculation could be the use at the current Space Weather Program of this institution. This calibrated TEC could be used for scientific research works development, to be used in the navigation and positioning oriented by GNSS satellites and for many geodesic applications.
