The development and use of computing environments to support teaching and learning, together with the evolution of mobile computing, have contributed significantly to the establishment of a new category of education, known as mobile learning or mobile learning (m-learning). In this new scenario, the existing learning environments, despite the benefits and facilities provided, present problems and challenges that need to be studied and analyzed. One of the issues to be addressed concerna to the establishment and adoption of architectural standards. In fact, most of these environments are built in isolation, having their own structures and architectures, which can negatively impact the ability of standardization and reuse. Our research fits into this context, having as the main goal to investigate and define a service-oriented reference architecture for mobile learning environments. This architecture, initially named Ref-mlearning, aims at contributing to the evolution and reuse of such environments, improving the quality and reducing the costs during their development. Ref-mlearning will be developed according to systematic processes for defining reference architectures and should be evaluated and validated by conducting case studies using, for instance, inspection checklist and application of methods for evaluating architecture.
