Evaluation of antimicrobial action and of cation release of acrylic resins incorporated with different materials formulated with silver

Abstract

The total and partial removable prosthesis act as a reservoir of microorganisms, which may favor the reinfection of its users. This event is favored mainly due to the characteristics of acrylic resin, such as porosity, roughness, and sorption. Currently, the incorporation of antimicrobials in dental materials is a trend. Facing the possibility of incorporation of antimicrobials in acrylic resins, as a means of combating the adhesion and colonization of microorganisms, this study aims to assess: 1) the anti-biofilm activity of three acrylic resins added with two antimicrobial additives (zeolite containing silver and zinc - Irgaguard® B 5000 and hydrogenated zirconium phosphate, sodium, and silver - AlphaSan® R7000) against oral bacteria; 2) the release of silver from acrylic resins incorporated with these antimicrobial additives. The acrylic resins QC20, SR Ivocap, and Onda-Cryl will be evaluated. In these materials, the two antimicrobial agents in different percentages (0% - control, 5%, and 10%) will be incorporated. The evaluation of anti-biofilm action will be held with the strains Streptococcus salivarius ATCC 25975, Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, Streptococcus sanguinis ATCC 10556, and Candida albicans ATCC 4082. The evaluation will occur in defined time intervals: 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours, in triplicate. At each time interval, the quantitative analysis of viable cells will be monitored, and the number of colony-forming units (cfu), expressed as log10 CFU / mL. Media and standard deviation will be calculated. The release of silver from the acrylic resin incorporated with Irgaguard ® B5000 and AlphaSan ® R7000 will be evaluated quantitatively by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy.
