Abstract

The patellofemoral pain syndrome (PPS) is defined as a painful complaint in the anterior aspect of the knee, most commonly in the medial face of patella, although peripatellar pain and / or retropatellar are also common. It is believed that abnormal lateral displacement of the patella in the femoral trochlea is the main factor of development of the PPS. Recent studies have shown that the patellofemoral joint has a different kinematic position in closed or open kinectic chain, so it has been highlighted the importance of the muscles of the hip and trunk in stabilizing the knee. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the relation of dynamic valgus knee with the strength of the hip and trunk muscles in subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome. This study has an observational design, case-control and will be selected 40 women divided into two groups: Group with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (n = 20) and control group (n = 20). Initially, the projection angle in the frontal plane will be picked up by the VirtualDub program and subsequently analyzed by the software Postural Assessment. After this procedure, a dynamometer is used to assess the isometric strength of the abductors, extensors and external rotators of the hip, and flexion, extension and inclination of the trunk. The data is analyzed using the SPSS 17.0 for Windows (Statistical Package for Social Sciences Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) assuming a significance level of 5%.
