Abstract

The groundwater in the region of the Jurubatuba channel, especially in greater industrial occupation areas, has become intensely contaminated by chlorinated aliphatic solvents. This contamination is derived from various sources and has reached production wells, posing risks for the local population. The problem is very complicated and challenging, given the difficulty in predicting flows in fractured aquifers and high toxicity and mobility of such contaminants. Since the first detections of chlorinated solvents in soil and groundwater in the region of the Jurubatuba channel, several studies have been performed to characterize contaminated sites in detail. However, the integration of the information gathered was never made. This master's project is part of the project Technical guidelines for the management of contaminated areas by chlorinated solvents (GESOL), funded by FINEP. Its goal is the preparation of a conceptual model from the contamination by chlorinated aliphatic solvents present in the industrial park area of the Jurubatuba Channel, by incorporating all available data in the contaminated area files of the Company of Technology and Environmental Sanitation of São Paulo (CETESB). The results will assist in a better understanding of the distribution and transport of contaminants in an integrated way throughout the area, serving as a basis for future studies in greater detail and an integrated management of the region, currently considered a critical area by CETESB.
