Kidney diseases in a tertiary hospital emergency unit

Abstract

Nephrologists perform a variety of activities in the hospital environment interfacing with all medical specialties. In a Tertiary Hospital Emergency Unit calls to evaluate creatinine and urea elevations due both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease or overlap of both stand out as common. Moreover, the nephrologist is often called to evaluate patients with acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, severe hypertension and suspected cases of glomerulopathies. In this study we will evaluate about 2,000 patients who were hospitalized at the Emergency Unit of HCFMRP-USP between January 2000 and March 2010 and were evaluated by nephrologists. The identification of these patients will be made through files belonging to the Nephrology Division. Patients syndromic diagnosis and clinical characteristics will be determined and also the kind of their treatment and its outcome.(AU)
