Abstract

Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) has been proven excellent for its biocompatibility and ability to stimulate angiogenesis, cellular adhesion and the formation of extracellular matrix, promoting the replacement and regeneration of tissue. The aim of this project is to incorporate the extract of Casearia sylvestris Sw. in NRL biomembranes and to study the extract delivery system behavior. The Casearia sylvestris Sw., commonly known as "guaçatonga" and it is used by indigenous population from South America (Brazil, Peru and Bolivia) in the treatment of several diseases, including cancer. The literature have some studies that corroborate some medicinal properties of Casearia sylvestris Sw. as being anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antiseptic, antiulcerous, anticancer, anti-snake venom and antimicrobial, which have been proven due to the presence of clerodane diterpene (casearins). One possible way to accelerate the tissue repair process, will be to incorporate the Casearia sylvestris Sw extract in NRL biomembranes approach. For the extract release study, biomembranes will be placed in 300 mL of aqueous solution, where the release behavior will be observed. Aliquots of this solution will be collected during an interval ranging from 10 to 20,000 minutes. The extract release as a function of time will be determined using the UV-VIS method. The incorporation of extract-containing NRL biomembrane will characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Preliminary tests conducted by our research group showed that the natural latex biomembrane can release the extract of Casearia sylvestris Sw. up to 10 days. Recent studies have shown that drugs/extract delivery system using natural latex biomembrane is promising for biomedical applications.
