Interested on how markers of social difference are converted into specific symbolic forms, this postdoctoral project aims to investigate the inflections of ethnic relations and distinctions in the Brazilian intellectual field through the career of Edison Carneiro (1912 - 1972) and his social trajectory. Carneiro was a mulatto intellectual, born in the city of Salvador, whose work was linked mainly to the discussions of race relations and the cultures of African origin in Brazil. The research focuses on the intelligibility of the contexts of operation and agency of ethnic and racial categories both in the life and the work of Edison Carneiro, apprehended from analytic framings with a double aim: on the one hand, to deepen the knowledge of the process of genesis, formation and consolidation of the race relations field of studies in its interface with the transformations unlocked by the institutionalization of the Brazilian social sciences from the 1930s onwards. On the other hand, to build a sociology or a social history of culture that, aware of the intersections between the social experience marks and the symbolic production, is able to reveal the problems associated to authority, to the constraints, and to the spaces of possibility of black intellectuals in modern Brazil.
