The animated life: (re)constructions of the historical world through the animated documentary

Abstract

This project proposes to study the relationship between documentary cinema and animation cinema considering the particularities of the animated documentary. According to this, we propose an analysis of the significant properties of the image generated by different animation techniques, such as cartoon, puppet animation, rotoscoping, computer animation etc., and the meanings produced in a documentary film by using narrative strategies of animation, such as metamorphosis, symbolism and metaphor, penetration, among others. In addition, the project proposes to make a detailed study of the relationship between sound and image in this type of production and to analyse the potential of animation for the reconstruction of facts through memory and through subjective approaches. This project also aims to perform a critical and reflexive analysis of the Brazilian animated documentary's production, highlighting the main producers and the context of production and exhibition of these films, placing this production in an international scene. In that way, it aims to provide a look at the relationship between documentary and animation cinema in Brazil.
