Abstract

The State of Sao Paulo is the largest producer of sugarcane and ethanol in Brazil. In view of this intense activity in the state, many regions including the region of Presidente Prudente-SP are influenced by pollutants generated by burning sugarcane during the harvest period, and may have increased pollution levels in this period association with vehicular pollution. Chronic exposure to these pollutants showed damage in all body systems and especially to the respiratory system. However, studies have shown that the effect of air pollution on the respiratory system is influenced by physical exercise performed by the individual. The objective of this study will assess the adverse effects of exposure to air pollution caused by the emission of pollutants from vehicular and biomass burning in the city of Presidente Prudente - SP on pulmonary function, functional capacity, pulmonary defense system, respiratory symptoms and inflammatory mediators in adult non-smokers who practice outdoor and indoor aerobic exercise. The subjects will be evaluated for functional capacity, pulmonary function, nasal symptom questionnaire, the level of carbon monoxide in expired air, nasal mucociliary transport and nasal inflammatory cell counts. The level of air pollution will be picked up at random and analyzed by active reflectance and fluorescence X-rays. The data will be analyzed by statistical program Graphpad Instat ®. Descriptive statistical analysis will be performed for clinical characterization of subjects. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test will be performed to distribution data. If confirmed the normality of the data will be performed analysis of variance for repeated measures followed by Tukey test. If not checked the normality of the data will be applied the Friedman test followed by Dunn's test. To compare between groups exposed in outdoor and indoor environment for all variables will be performed using the unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test. The level of significance is pd0.05.
