Abstract

Arthroscopy has a diagnostic and therapeutic function in joint disease. Even with modern imaging modalities, it is still considered the gold standard for diagnosing equine joint problems. It is well established that different physico-chemical properties of infusion solutions may determine changes in articular cartilage surface. Although several studies aimed to find an ideal infusion solution focusing to its biochemical properties, few of them observed their physical characteristics, as temperature, in other species. In the first part of this study four different temperatures of infusion solutions (5, 12, 25 and 38 ºC) will be evaluated in four groups of six joints, in sheep. In each group, comparative femoropatelar synovial membrane and articular cartilage biopsies will be submitted for hystopathologic and electronic microscopy, immediately before infusion and after one hour of infusion. On the second part of the experiment, the two less harmful temperatures for the sheep articular cartilage will be used in the infusion solutions of intercarpal joints of six horses, divided in two groups of six joints (right and left); besides articular cartilage and synovial membrane biopsies, synovial fluid analysis will be undertaken before infusion, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after infusion, for comparative determination of IL-1, PGE2, TNF-± and glycosaminoglycans' levels. During all arthroscopic procedures two probes will be held in place, one for intra-articular and the other for transrectal temperature assessment, allowing temperature comparison before, during and after one hour of infusion.
