Abstract

Abstract: Correction of anterior open bite and stability after treatment concern to orthodontists, especially when skeletal. The speech therapy has been associated with the treatment of malocclusion in order to promote its results through the balance of muscle and adequation of stomatognathic functions. Despite positive reports, it still requires scientific proof of therapeutic programs. Purpose: Propose and analyze the effectiveness of a therapeutic program for children with anterior open bite. Methods: Clinical study with therapeutic intervention. Will be offered an orofacial myofunctional exercise program for children with anterior open bite during at least 120 days (4 months = 16 sessions). Place: Department of Children's Clinic, Preventive and Social Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (FORP-USP) and in the Research Laboratory of the Stomatognathic System, room II (LISE), Course of Speech Therapy, School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto. Subject: Forty subjects will be selected in the mixed dentition aged 6-11 years with anterior open bite (AOB). Twenty subjects paired for age and sex, with normal occlusion compose the control group (C), whose data will be used for comparative analysis. Subjects with AOB will be divided according to specific criteria of malocclusion: group with dentoalveolar anterior open bite (DAOB), a group with skeletal anterior open bite (SAOB). Methods of measurement of results of therapy: the subjects will be evaluated before, during and after treatment by means of orofacial myofunctional evaluation (OMES-E), surface electromyography (EMG) of masseter and temporal muscles and tongue strength with the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI). The analysis will be performed by non-parametric statistics for the data in interval level of measurement and parametric data at ratio level (continuous). The goals to be achieved with this proposal are: (a) define a speech therapy program for children with anterior open bite, according to the needs of favorable physiological stimuli to muscle changes and growth / development period, (b) analysis effectiveness of the program.Keyword: orofacial functions, speech, myofunctional disorders, orofacial myology, chewing
