Due to the industrialization of civil construction, technological and economical development have been intensified. In this way, the search for more rational and economical structural systems, as the composite elements of steel and concrete, has been increased. Among these elements, partially encased composite columns present positive features in both, structural behavior and executive process. However, the mandatory use of stirrups, required by Brazilian Code, makes difficult the process and increases costs. In this way, this research aims to analyze and discuss the structural behavior of partially encased composite columns. Moreover, to evaluate the possibility of replacing stirrups by fibers or by welded steel meshes. To reach these goals, it is proposed an experimental program and a numerical analysis based on finite element method.
