Between events and episodes: the rainfall exceptionalities and the floods in Rio de Janeiro urban space

Abstract

Have been reported as increasingly recurrent environmental problems affecting contemporary society. The rain extreme events are considered that impacting negatively on society, leading to damages and therefore interfere with the geographic space (re) production. In this context, the project aims is characterize the rainy genesis in the county of Rio de Janeiro, especially identifying the extreme precipitation events (1999-2010). Initially we seek to achieve a concept of extreme event theoretical discussion, deeply linked to concepts of environmental fragility, vulnerability and risk. This discussion will be addressed from Geography Climate perspective, seeking a climate dynamics review and its impacts on the territory. About the methodological procedures, from rainfall data statistical treatment obtained through GeoRio INMET ranks and stations identify what were the wettest years using the technique of percentiles. In sequence, we'll find the extreme precipitation events, and will hold the rhythm analysis with an aim to better understanding these episodes genesis and heavy rains impacts.
