Abstract

Azo dyes represent 70% of organic dyes produced worldwide. Due to their toxicity, large industrial use and low removal efficiency in conventional treatments, dyes are substances of great environmental concern. Dyes can be discharged into the environment and cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Among the azo dyes, the textile dye Disperse Red 1 and Disperse Red 13 are highly acute toxic when compared with other dyes of the same class. These dyes also showed mutagenicity in the Salmonella/micro some assay, so they may be able to interfering the cell division and delay regeneration processes. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of Disperse Red 1 and Disperse Red 13 on Hydra attenuate regeneration. This freshwater organism is a secondary consumer and is able to regenerate a new body from the gastric region within 72 hours. In this study we expect to obtain more information to complement the toxicity evaluation of these dyes. (AU)
