Synthesis, Characterization and Processing of Bioabsorbable Polymers to Use in Tissue Engineering

Abstract

Bad funtioning or loss of total or partial functions of an organ or tissue resulting from disease or trauma is currently one of the most important and troubling public health problems in the world, reaching a very significant number os people. In many cases, the tissue transplant from the patient himself (autologous) when possible is the preferred method. However, often lesions caused in the new place where it is removed from the tissue transplantation, becoming therefore not feasible in practice many cases. To help people who suffer from some of these limitations, recent advances in modern medicine combined with the increased life expectancy, have enabled the development/improvement of biomaterials and techniques that biomanufacturing, promote the improvement of quality of life of these people. This area of science and technology is the subject of international concern and the subject of significant research. Assessing the world stage in research in biomaterials, this project, linked to the thematic project titled "National Institute of Science & Biomanufacturing Technology: Synthesis of Biomaterials, Simulation and Process - BIOFABRIS"(FAPESP Process No. 2008/57860-3) aims to study and synthesis of bioabsorbable polymers derived from lactic and glycolic acids, designed to satisfactorily perform the functions and basic requirements for application as a biomaterial used in Tissue Engineering. For this purpose, different routes synthesis and changes in the structures of the polymers will be evaluated by relating them to processing of these polymers in order to biomanufacturing, seeking to meet the needs of medical applications. For processing these polymers will be assessing the feasibility of biomanufacturing application process using a bioextruder. In this context, as one of the applications, it will be studied the possibility of application of materials developed in this project for regeneration of lesions trachea. Professors are involved in this step of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Unicamp, participants of BIOFABRIS.
