Abstract

Copaifera L. genus belongs to the family Leguminosae Juss., sub-family Caesalpinioideae Kunth. In Brazil, Copaifera species are widely spread in Amazonas, Pará and Ceará states and are worldwide known by the oil-resin that can be sustainable extracted from its trunk, due to extensive use in folk medicine. In particular, C. langsdorffii Desf. species has been studied by several chemist, botanist and pharmacologist researchers. These studies mostly are related to oil-resin or volatile fraction obtained from wood trunk. However, few studies are related to the chemical composition and biological properties of other plant parts, such as leaves, as well as to the development of analytical methodologies to verify the authenticity of these products. So far, only a method to quantify the two major flavonoids has been developed. Since the aerial parts extract is rich in galloylquinic compounds, the aim of this study is to undertake the isolation and identification of quinic acid derivatives, as well as the development of validated analytical method by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography for galloylquinic quantification. For this, different chromatographic techniques will be used for the isolation of the main galloylquinic of the leaves, specialy high-speedy counter-current chromatography. Physical methods, such as nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, will be used to identify them. Monthly, qualitative and quantitative analysis of phenolic compounds from 10 population of C. langsdorffii cultivated will also be made in order to study the role of seasonality on the chemical profile of the leaves of this species.
