Abstract

Introduction: Mucociliary dysfunction is one of the clinical manifestations present in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition, there are systemic manifestations such as skeletal muscle dysfunction that is associated with fatigue, dyspnea and exercise intolerance. Therefore, strength training becomes an important component in the process of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). In addition, exercises are associated with an increased level of adrenergic mediators and it is expected that the mucociliary transport change during or after physical activity, since it is known that autonomic stimulation influences mucociliary clearance. Objectives: To evaluate and compare the acute and chronic response of the mucociliary transport of patients with COPD compared to a strength training protocol, and investigate the involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in such a response. Methods: Patients with COPD and healthy subjects will be assessed by mucociliary transport from saccharin transit time (STT) and the autonomic nervous system activity by heart rate variability (HRV) before and after a strength exercise and before and after protocol strength training 12 weeks. Statistical analysis: The study of HRV and TTS variables will be determined by means of analysis of variancefor repeated measures model in independent groups, complemented by the Bonferroni or Dunn multiple comparisons . Correlations will be evaluated using the Pearson or Sperman coefficients. The choice of tests will depend on the normal distribution of data. The level of significance will be p<0,05.
