Abstract

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a major public health problem in Brazil, with an increasing number of cases in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. However, in this state in the municipalities of Corumbá and Ladário, suspected of Lutzomyia cruzi is primarily responsible for the transmission of the parasite and Lutzomyia forattinii has secondary importance. This study aims to assess the vector capacity of Lu. cruzi and Lu. forattinii from transmission area of visceral leishmaniasis in Corumbá, MS. To evaluate the vectorial capacity of both species will be obtained for each infective survival, through the construction of life table (estimate vertical and laboratory), the attractiveness of the dog, the rate of infection after experimental exposure of insects to dogs infected by L. (L.) i. chagasi, the extrinsic incubation period of the parasite and the duration of the gonotrophic cycle. With this project, is expected to estimate the capacity and demonstrate the competence of the two vector species targeted by this study in relation to L. (L.) infantum chagasi.
