The (de)construction of the Latin America: illustrated press in the second half of the 19th century (Argentine and Brazil)

Abstract

The project "The (de)construction of the Latin America: illustrated press in the second half of the nineteenth century (Argentine and Brazil)" intends to analyze the illustrated collection included in illustrated magazines, contemporary among themseives, in Brazil and in the Argentine. Initially they were listed six newspapers: three in Brazil: (Revista lllustrada -1876-1898; O Besouro - 1878-1879; Don Quixote - 1895-1903) and three in the Argentine (El Mosquito -1863-1893; La llustración Argentina - 1881-1884; Don Quijote -1884-1905). It seeks be understood like those images are articulated with the arguments around subjects as the progress, the need of "civilize itself and, questions about the cultural output, especially, about the construction of a national identity. It looks to exist in those publications some propositions and orientation to the public, translated into figures, with pedagogical objectives of formation of an illustrated society. The constructions and deconstructions of myths and national symbols presented in those newspapers permit to the researcher identify a rich universe of creation, penetrated by the search of understanding and criticism of the countries.
