A dialogue between the Brazilian and British anthropological production about family, kinship and relatedness in rural Brazil

Abstract

This project aims at the approximation of the recent anthropological approaches on the family in Brazil, especially in so-called rural universes and in small communities, to the contemporary kinship theory that have been developed, especially in the UK. The data collected and analysis made in my previous researches in the interior of Pernambuco and northern Mato Grosso, constitute the main empirical field. But this research aims to develop more general overviews on the subject, in line with work done by other researchers in Brazil. This work is not only about the approach of empirical data obtained in Brazil to foreign theoretical models. Above all, it proposes a dialogue between anthropological analytic propositions made in Brazil and the United Kingdom today. The choice of Edinburgh University to host this work is due to the supervision of Dr. Janet Carsten, a fundamental reference in this field of debate, and is aimed at strengthening the dialogue already begun with other teachers and students of social anthropology at the School of Social Sciences and politics of that University. The period of stay in Edinburgh will provide my participation in seminars and academic events, access to a vast literature in part unavailable in Brazil, the closer links with academics leading researchers in the field of kinship, and the elaboration of manuscripts for presentation and future publication, resulting from this project.
