The anesthetic and surgical mortality in veterinary medicine has been reduced greatly over the past decades, but is still very high compared to rates in human medicine. Studies on perioperative mortality and correlated morbidity proved to be of great importance in this context, in order to understand and better predict the risk factors associated with the anesthetic and surgical patient. The present study aims to obtain the total mortality rate and mortality by categories (age, ASA, type of procedure, breed, anesthetic protocol) of anesthetic canine patients from the Veterinary Hospital of "Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia", University of São Paulo, between the years of 2004 and 2005 (1 year period). A second stage will seek to correlate complications in the transoperative period and mortality of young and healthy dogs (less than 6 years, ASA 1) undergoing elective procedures under inhalation anesthesia (isoflurane).
