Glicemic index and glicemic load adult diet at different levels of cardiovascular risk

Abstract

In Brazil, cardiovascular diseases represent the first causes of death and account for nearly one third of all deaths and 65% of total deaths in the age group 30 to 69 years of age. The diet is a major environmental factor to the prevention and treatment of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. In addition, in recent years the impact of carbohydrate consumption has motivated a lot of research because the negative impact of different glycemic index (GI) and load (GL). Although there is no consensus in the scientific, the high GI and GL have demonstrated negative association with the prevention and control of chronic diseases (obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia and cancer). In this project, our aim is to assess the association between glycemic index and glycemic load diet in adults with low, intermediate and high cardiovascular risk. It is a cross-sectional quantitative and analytical approach, in which 100 patients seen at University Hospital classified in low, intermediate and high cardiovascular risk, according to Framingham Risk Score. The food intake assessment will be done through the application of three 24-hour recall on alternate days. The GI will be analyzed according to the protocol of the FAO / WHO Expert Consultation (1998). It will be calculated the GI and GL each meal separately and complete diet in order to have knowledge of the individual contribution of each meal for the IG and CG of the total diet. Meals and diet will be categorized as low, medium or high GI, according to the classification of Brand-Miller et al. (2009). It will be considered a suitable low-GI diet. Similarly, glycemic load will classified second Burani (2010) and considered an adequate diet of low glycemic load. These values will be analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19.0 to determine association between GI and GL and the different levels of cardiovascular risk.(AU)
