The project aims to analyze the draws of Jurandir Ubirajara Campos in Os Doze Trabalhos de Hercules (1944) written by Monteiro Lobato, so that we can better understand the dynamic of the images in the period. By studying the illustrations in its context of production and immediate reception, we expect to attest that there is no such thing as independent structures, but hybrid ones. Furthermore, we expect to establish the communication among the different systems in which those images circulated. Hence, we intend to establish the relation amid the representation of Greek mythology in the work of Monteiro Lobato and images in schoolbooks, ads, and other cultural systems, in order to understand the visual culture consumed by children and teenagers during the period. Broadly, we expect to contribute to upcoming researches on visual culture, both in theory and methodology, by displacing the historian's focus on visual sources into a more rewarding treatment of visuality as an important dimension of social life and historical processes.
