Abstract

The genus Hisonotus was described by Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 and has long been considered junior synonym of Otocinclus and/or Microlepidogaster. After its revalidation, many new species were described and currently Hisonotus is the most specious genus within the Hypoptopomatinae, with 28 valid species. Many studies have included Hisonotus species in phylogenetic analysis, but neither found any unique synapomorphy for the genus. Thus, Hisonotus diagnosis is inadequate, which difficults the description of new species and the knowlegde of the real diversity of the genus. In addition, there is no consensus on the placement of the genus, even as to its monophyly. Thus, this project aims to carry out a phylogenetic analysis of Hisonotus, based on morphological characters, in order to assess its monophyly, and the relationship among Hisonotus species and of them and other Hypoptopomatinae members.
