Abstract

Mammals can discriminate a vast number of odorants through their sense of smell. In the nasal cavity there are millions of olfactory sensory neurons, which are involved in this task. Odorants activate odorant receptors expressed in the cilia of olfactory neurons. The Odorant Receptors (ORs) belong to the GPCR superfamily and constitute a large gene family composed of around 1000 members in mice. Each olfactory neuron expresses one single type of OR gene, while the remaining OR genes remain silent. In this project we plan to investigate wether non codig RNAs are involved in the regulation of OR gene expression. (AU)
