The objectives of this project are the development and application of nanostructured materials technology for advanced oxidation process for the purpose of treating contaminated water with ciprofloxacin in bench scale and in a real situation involving hospital effluent. Binary metal electrocatalysts such as nickel and tin, titanium and lanthanium will be prepared by the polymeric precursor method, and/ or structures of the core-shell type, cerium and gold, tungsten and gold, will be prepared by chemical reduction method and it will be characterized by physical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive of X-ray (EDX), X-ray Phototoelectronic spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Gas diffusion electrodes will be made, and the efficiency of electrocatalysts will first be evaluated by means of voltammetric techniques as well as study of the Oxygen Reduction Reaction by rotating ring-disk. Subsequently, the degradation efficiency will be evaluated by the initial and final concentrations of organic pollutants by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC). The possible dissolution of the catalyst will be studied by techniques of UV-visible spectrophotometry and/or Atomic Absorption Spectrometry with Atomization in Flame and Optical Emission Inductively Coupled Plasma. The development of the project aims to get better results from degradation of ciprofloxacin, coupled with lower treatment costs, operation and mineralization, using nanostructured materials. (AU)
