Abstract

Vascular access is of great importance, especially in the treatment of cancer patients. Totally implantable devices have been increasingly used and allow secure access to intravenous therapy. New devices and technical refinements, such as ultrasound-guided puncture, make necessary most current studies of both the implant procedure and the follow-up of patients with these catheters. Our aim is to promote the series in one of the leading cancer treatment centers in the world, reflecting the technical advances nowadays. To do so, we will prospectively evaluate the immediate results of catheter implantation in 1000 patients with cancer and the occurrence of complications directly associated with the surgical procedure, besides studying their evolution during and after completion of treating cancer in relation to its permeability, infectious and thromboembolic events, and complications related to the material.(AU)
