The Bancos de Custeio Rural and the agricultural credit in São Paulo (1906-1914)

Abstract

The research is an investigation on the Bancos de Custeio Rural. A network of credit unions organized in 1906 and has spread to 48 cities in the state of São Paulo, having failed in 1914. These banks had a relatively short existence, and apparently a small range within the credit system, but work with the hypothesis of their study reveal how the funding worked the first republic in the Sao Paulocoffee - something still very little known - and yet, allow a reflection on how the state worked to ease tensions generated by the coffee crisis of 1898-1906, and with these banks had experienced a new funding model of the coffee. Ourgoal is to rebuild the foundation, the mode of action and bankruptcy of banks, seeking to contextualize them within the First Republic of Sao Paulo coffee;analyze the reasons for its creation, the interests for and against their establishment and their justifications; set its role within the complex coffee,considering the alternatives already discussed the credit history, to clarify itsrole in the banking system in São Paulo, as literature, and their relationship with him, find the reasons that led to bankruptcy and, finally, to understand verifiedthe controversy in the newspapers of 1914 about whether the government couldintervene in agricultural credit
